Auggie

That girl was the cutest thing he’d ever seen. The way she looked up at him expectantly had him grinning.

“Not exactly. I’m your…” He almost said brother-in-law but that was just wishful thinking at this point. “I’m Russell’s boyfriend.”

Scarlet narrowed her eyes at him, then glanced at Russell as he got up. Her eyes went wide, and she whirled around to ask her mother, “Russell’s the one you told me about, isn’t he?”

Auggie saw the breath rush out of Russell as he looked at Eleanor with surprise.

“Yes, sweetie. Russell is the one I told you about.”

“I have a brother. Yay!” Scarlet pumped her fist in the air before running to her father who sent her back to her bedroom with an order to do her homework. She went without complaint, waving at Russell and Auggie who waved back.

“So, I take it he’s not one of the two who broke in,” David said to Eleanor.

Russell’s head snapped towards Eleanor. “The twins broke into your house?”

Eleanor looked embarrassed as she nodded. Auggie went to reach for Russell because he could feel the anger coming off of him.

“Motherfucker. I don’t care if he’s already dying; I’m gonna fucking kill him,” Russell fumed.

Russell looked like he was about to storm off, so Auggie jumped in front of him and put his hands on the man’s chest. He couldn’t do anything physically to stop him, but he knew Russell wouldn’t do anything to hurt him, so he’d have to stay put.

“Easy, babe,” Auggie said, keeping his voice low.

The anger left Russell’s eyes and he put his hands over Auggie’s, keeping them there.

Eleanor cleared her throat. “You think your dad—”

Russell cut off Eleanor, saying, “Those two dipshits don’t do anything of their own accord. They follow Paul’s every whim.”

Auggie stepped to the side just in time to see the absolute heartbreak on Eleanor’s face. He felt for her. He really did. Leaving her kids was a shitty move, but he truly believed she did it in their best interest and was planning to get them back.

David cursed under his breath, then excused himself and walked out of the room. Auggie met Russell’s gaze, seeing an array of emotions flashing through his eyes.

“We should get going,” Russell said.

“You could stay for dinner?” Eleanor suggested, so much hope in her voice.

Auggie could tell how much everything had taken out of Russell already, so he took it upon himself to decline the offer.

“I’m sorry, Eleanor. It’s been a really long and tiring day.”

Eleanor nodded and he thought he spotted tears in her eyes.

“I want to see her,” Russell said and turned to Eleanor. “I want to know my sister. I know I’m not much better than the others, but I would never hurt her or put her in a situation where she could get hurt. You know that, right?”

The smile on Eleanor’s face was bright as she said, “I know and I would love that.”

She followed them to the front door where she patted Russell’s chest and glanced at Auggie before saying to Russell, “You should keep that one.
